MATHS

Maths at Tillington Manor Primary School

At Tillington Manor Primary School we use the White Rose Maths scheme as the spine of our approach to maths, supported by the North Midlands Maths Hub.

White Rose Maths is influenced, inspired and informed by the work of leading maths researchers and practitioners across the world.  Maths at Tillington is practical, fun and relevant to our children.  All of our children have lots of opportunities in reasoning and problem solving activities in order to achieve the aims of the National Curriculum.

The White Rose schemes have number at the heart and a lot of time is spent reinforcing number to build competency. It also provides opportunities to build reasoning and problem solving into each lesson.

White Rose believes that all children, who are introduced to a concept, should have the opportunity to build on their abilities by following a concrete-pictorial-abstract approach.

Concrete – children should have the opportunity to use concrete objects to help them understand what they are doing.

Pictorial – alongside this children should use pictorial representations. These representations can then be used to help reason and solve problems.

Abstract – both concrete and pictorial representations should support children’s understanding of abstract methods.

Our Aims

We aim to ensure that our curriculum for Mathematics enables all pupils to:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

Times Table Rockstars

At Tillington, we are very lucky to have access to Times Tables Rock Stars which is a carefully sequenced programme of daily times tables practice for your children.  This allows them to practice their times tables in a fun and interactive way, encouraging competition and pupil led learning.  The more they practice, the more coins they earn to spend on their avatars and each time they collect coins, they move up the in class/school leaderboard.  The image above takes you to the website and all children in school should have a log in to access the website.

White Rose 1-Minute Maths

1-minute maths offers children engaging and easily accessible practice in basic number. There’s no specific route or starting point. Having chosen a topic, each user answers a series of randomly generated questions (a different set of questions every time means they learn the concept, not a sequence of answers).

When the one minute’s up, the questions are automatically marked and presented on a breakdown screen, giving instant feedback on how they’ve done. If they’re struggling with a question, a ‘Hint’ button reformats the question as a familiar manipulative display that mirrors the approaches used in the White Rose Maths schemes of learning.
