We have started Y4/5 focussing on our topic ‘The Ancient Egyptians’. In the first half term, we researched the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb and produced a diary entry in the role of Howard Carter (the archaeologist who discovered the tomb).
We have also looked at the mummification process. The children enjoyed producing a non-chronological report about the process, and couldn’t believe what the Egyptians used to do to the bodies!
Our literacy text this term is ‘The Time Travelling Cat and the Egyptian Goddess’. During our guided reading sessions, we have been looking at reading VIPERS and completing tasks around these.
During this half term, we will be using the text in literacy to rewrite a chapter, using fronted adverbials, relative clauses and direct speech.
The children have enjoyed a range of problem solving and reasoning activities in maths this year. We have covered place value, with the children looking at concrete and pictorial representations of numbers. Once we had looked at place value, we moved on to addition and subtraction. In addition to this, we have been improving our reasoning skills and explaining how to use the column method.
This half term we will be focussing on multiplication and division.
Our science topic has been ‘forces’, looking at how gravity, friction and air resistance works through a variety of experiments.
This half term we will be focussing materials and their properties.
Our PE sessions are taught by PE specialists ‘Bee Active’, who teach children and range of games and skills to aid their physical development.
